I did not give much weight to that Summit, but I must recognise that the message sent to the Israeli Government and people, as well as to the world, is the right one, coming as it does after twelve months of unilateral observance by Hamas of the "hudna" originally proposed by Haniyeh in early 2007 despite the continuing aggression of the IDF and the perfidious acceleration of the illegal settlements programme by Israel. It is true that about four to six weeks ago, Hamas showed that it CAN respond to Israeli contempt for human life and for a sincere hudna, but it has kept its demonstration measured.
So the Summit did well not to rescind the Sudi 2002 peace offer. Israel would do itself and the world a favour byo reciprocating. |
