I agree with Michael from Haifa who uses the Yiddish rendition of the term `Basari-Chalavi (Milk-Meat). Orthodox-secular is indee a contradiction in terms which aims at creating a joint secular national culture with religion being relegated to the status of being a `private matter`. I a surprised tjhat Zevulon Orlev of the Mafdal voted for it and more surprised that the rabbi of Scandinavia, Michael Melchior initiated such a law.
For a religious Jew, religion is not a `private matter. It is a national creed and part of national ideology that we are the people of HKB"H, and that keeping Torah and mitzvot is the obligation of every Jew. That is the purpose of religious education and all temporal functions in the stateare extentions of that idea. If there are Jewish `dropouts` who over the past 200 some odd years who have chosen a gentilized secular lifestyle,it is to be regretted, but clearly religious education has to inculcate that Torah and Mitzvot are our national ideology. |
