| The complete loss of brainstem and supratentorial function leads to a tremendously unstable situation. Lower organ function can usually be supported for only a few days. Ventilatory support, pressors, and multiple other drips all are required with all the astronomical costs of icu care, all for nothing, because nothing can be done to save the brain dead patient. But their families can decide to help save so many other people by agreeing to donation. Perhaps more dialogue between religious authorities and physicians would help bridge this divide. |
