What`s interesting isn`t what the article`s about -- it`s what the scale is.

As usual, Israel is compared to the United States. Is it better, is it worse, is it an asset, is it liked? What will America say? Does America approve?

Always the US. How to define Israel is unclear. It`s obviously hyperbole to call it the 51st state. It certainly isn`t a colony. However, in at least a psychological sense, Israel isn`t independent either.

After all, the material consequences aside, wouldn`t Israel be lost if the US somehow abruptly vanished? What would be its place in the world? Would it really have meaning absent the US?
