| Israel has been struggling for its very existence since 1948. It is only now succeeding in political and economic ways. In many respects it is a miracle: it prospers in a sea of hatred and discrimination; its neighbors want to destroy it; 20% of its own population have strong ethnic ties to its enemies; the borders it started with in 1948 are indefensible; etc., etc. With all of these negatives, Israel has grown and prospered. It has created some of the best universities in the world; scores of new companies have been born in Israel and have expanded beyond its borders; it has a stable democratic political system, with checks and balances; Israel has a free press; Israelis have literally made the desert bloom. Many countries and peoples understand the threats to is very existence. They admire and respect what the Israelis have been able to accomplish in so short a time under the circumstances it finds itself in. Apparently, the author of this article is not one of them, but I am. |
