"Hamas is liable to gain control [of the West Bank] and topple the last vestiges of sane, albeit weak, leadership." (Y. Marcus) Yes it is, indeed. The same Hamas, whose name no one had ever heard prior to the first Palestinian uprising against our settlement enterprise and the perpetuation of the occupation that goes with it - is now in full control of the Palestinian parliament, and of the entire Gaza Strip and its border with Egypt. For all forms of folly there is a price to be paid.
A "sane AND a strong" leadership in the West Bank, is the last thing our leaders have always been interested in, for such a leadership, strong from being supported by a clear majority of its people, would also be, clearly and inevitably, strong enough to successfully counter any further effort to impose Israel`s will on a foreign and stateless people.
Thus it was no accident that Ariel Sharon so insisted to withdraw from the Gaza Strip UNILATERALLY, leaving behind him the key of the city on its gate, for anyone interested.
Peace is concluded between two sovereign parties, not between a regional superpower and an occupied, divided and stateless population. |
