Wiesel does not deserve to light a torch for the 60th anniversary of Israel, and fortunately he will not do so. Wiesel left Israel for the US because there are too many Jews here who suffered from the Shoah and, therefore, he could not "sell" it and make a living out of it in Israel. "Selling" the Shoah to non-Jews is easier and has proven more profitable, even earning him a Nobel Prize. Wiesel believes and wants others to believe that he is the personnification of the Shoah. He always appears in public as if in mourning about it. The previous commitments he mentions as an excuse for not coming are probably more attractive as PR and possibly financially.
