Governments and their leaders are self-interested. The paradox of this Republican administration pressuring Israel is that Americans who make the prospective positioning on Israel for the next administration a major consideration in their vote will still trust MacCain more than either of the Democrats, and especially more than Obama. The devil that is known may thus not be better than the devil that is yet to come for that reason alone. Maybe this time is better used by getting the Middle East issue more front and center in the American campaign, rather than rushing an agreement because of a friend`s self interest. Other conflict resolutions like South Africa and Ireland had greater public participation in the process, and elections in Israel and the USA will give opportunity for such participation. The next president will pursue America`s interest but not with the pressure of a deadline. How can acting out of panic or fear be the best way forward?
