Years ago - when I studied at the Yeshiva - we were taught of the glorious days of the construction of the Second Temple. The builders were talmidei chachamim as well as soldiers.
In one hand they held the safra...(the sefer...the connotation for our Torah.) In their second hand they held the seifa - the sword.
It was not sufficient for them to hold only the safra or only the seifa. They had to hold both.
Imagine, even though both their hands were occupied with Torah study and with the defense of the land and the people, the Beit Hamikdash was still constructed.
There is a discernable group in Israel which holds both Torah and sword. One does not have to be part of Gush Emunim (and I am definitely NOT) to appreciate that their`s is the most positive path. |
