| When Ahmadinejad wrote a letter to his closest trade partner in the West, Merkel refused to publish it. The Iranian leader had shown great cleverness. He addressed the deep anti-US and anti-Semitic sentiments inside the German society, opinions which Merkel rightly called to have become those of the centre of this society. After the Iranians published the letter, the Germans were forced to follow suit. In another letter to the French president, Ahmadinejad wrote that sanctions against Iran would never work because Germany would never comply with them. This letter has been published in the French press, but not in Germany. Very lukewarm was the response to the Holocaust denial conference in Tehran. Merkel found it even not necessary to recall the German ambassador for consultations. It shows clearly the strong bonds that exist between the country that perpetrated the Holocaust and the one which announced a new one. |
