It has been since Ronald Reagan. The USA refuses to say one way or the other because it would have no choice but to say that this is illegal. And it doesn`t want to say THAT, because Israel is her ally, and the USA does not want to shaft her ally. So the USA: 1) won`t say they are illegal 2) won`t say they are legal 3) but will say "let`s not concern ourselves with such unhelpful issues". NW: "Ban Ki-moon also `urged Israel to reconsider(read not illegal to build)` " Untrue: the UN has passed resolutions stating that these settlements are illegal under Int`l Law. But *Ban* can`t do more than "urge Israel to reconsider", because the Office of the Secretary General gives him no power to do any more than that. |
