There is a well documented and oft-repeated story of how the Satmar Rebbe, R Yoel, ZYA, asked Mayor John Lindsay, who came seeking his support -about Lindsay`s views on Israel. Lindsay said that he was aware that Satmar did not support the State of Israel, but he did.
The Satmar Rebbe said "Good, you should continue to do so." When his surprised chasidim asked him, he explained: "We have a shita in Torah that leads us to oppose the state, but a gentile who does not support the state of Israel simply is an anti-semite."
He loved every Jew with a fierce passion...the Left who have abandoned Torah simply cannot conceive of it. I say that not angrily, but with a sense of sorrow for those who have been numbed to the reality of the unity of all Jews. |
