Let me clarify here. First of all, I do not believe that I stated that Palestinian refugees do not have a right of compensation (nor has, BTW, the Government of Israel denied this). I believe that they do.
Secondly, the specific case of the Jewish Quarter is in an area indisputably under Israeli control, and this control is the direct result of military action in response to aggression on the part of Jordan (i.e. the shelling of civilian areas within Israel in June 1967). That those areas under question are clearly the property of Jews who resided or reside there is also not in dispute. In fact, if you read the article you will see that the authorities responsible are going to considerable effort to verify this.
I would correct a statement that you made as ?fact?, but that are not wholly accurate. You state that ?Palestinian residence in the over 400 village depopulated by Israel in 1948 goes back generations.? First, I would argue that ?some?, perhaps even ?many? of these villages were depopulated by Israel in the same way that the Jewish Quarter was depopulated by the Arab Legion. However, not all were. Secondly, I would say that ?many? of these village populations went back generations. However, many did not.
Finally, your statement that ?This idea that only rights should apply to only some people is sadly typically Israeli and is at the heart of why this conflict continues? is also not accurate. This argument is not ?typically Israeli?, nor is it solely Israeli. As an example, you might want to consult the Hamas Charter (or even some of the more strident posters on these talkbacks). |
