The above statement is part of the crux of the problem. For an alarming number, Zionism has been redifined to mean hanging on to land for biblical sentiments without consideration of the cost to the Palestinians in particular, but also to Israelis. Those students murder was appalling! But it did not strike at the heart of the Zionist project, but rather at one of the most reactionary and fascist mutations of it. While part of the political ideology on the Right is driven primarily by security concerns; it is not the case with religious Zionism. Unity under the banner of embracing religious Zionism, of turning a blind eye to the dangerous and fanatic ideology on which it is predicated, is going to lead Israel on the path of destruction. |
