: What does this all have to do with the Torah
An interesting question, JK. Perhaps you have participated in a Kabbalat Shabbat service at one time? If so, you may have noticed that the majority of the Kabbalat service itself is the recitation of psalms which in which we exhort ourselves to sing to Hashem. L`chu Neranana, Shiru L`Hashem Shir Had, Mizmor, Shiru L`Hashem Shir Hadash, Mizmor Shir L`Yom HaShabbat...
Do you see a pattern yet? What might this entire liturgy based on song have to do with the Torah, you ask? Hmm...
Also note, the singing referred to in the liturgy explicitly mentions the use of stringed instruments: "Upon `ten-stringed instrument` and the lyre, with singing accompanied by a harp. For you have gladdened me, Hashem, with your deeds; at the works of your Hands I sing glad song". [English translation of Mizmor Shir L`Yom HaShabbat from Art Scroll Siddur]
Does your congregation mumble these sections silently? Is every Shabbos still mourning the lost Temple? |
