What actually happened:
Israel was methodically, continuously hunting down and killing members of Hamas.
Hamas finally retaliated, heavily bombarding Ashkelon et al. Hamas stated it would stop firing rockets as soon as Israel abandoned its assassinations. Instead, Israel attempted to force Hamas to continue to accept the regime of murder-at-will by launching an indiscriminate pogrom into Gaza.
This tactic massively backfired, increasing sympathy for Hamas among the Palestinians and provoking an international outcry.
Now Israel has been forced to accept Hamas` terms -- even if she doesn`t want to admit it. The assassinations will stop. Hamas will indeed decide when and if the conflict will resume. |
