In the West Bank, the influence of Fatah, and Abbas, is far stronger than it was in Gaza.

And thus the tendency has been to forbear violence to encourage peace.

The Olmert government has made it very clear it has no intention of ever negotiating in good faith with Abbas.

It might well have felt it could get away with that because things have been relatively calm in the West Bank.

How long does Olmert think the people of the West Bank will eschew violence for peace if there is no peace - or even a bit of improvement in their lives - forthcoming?

The death of Arafat created the opportunity of a generation for peace.

Olmert has squandered it.

The situation in the West Bank is deteriorating.

Time is running out.
