I think this is very sad case. A convert (who my otherwise be sincere) falling in love with a Cohen. Its very very sad.

On the halachic logic of it, my understanding:

Even if you right that the "sin" is on the Cohen not the convert, if the convert converted knowing that she would marry a Cohen, which means encouraging someone else to break the Torah Law (which is prohibited) than it seems reasonable to assume she was not sincere and, by definition, did not really convert ( I think that is how the logic would go). However, if she converted before she knew her current husband, then it would seem there are no grounds to say the conversion was not sincere at the time it occurred, which is what I understand counts.
