The exact date is not known but the Christian (Catholic) church decided to celebrate his birth on Dec. 25. If you look at most religious tradition dates of celebration are picked for many reason but the cause for celebration is the important part. The US government for example is essentially off on Dec. 25th, as are most stores, businesses, everything really.
