| "The conclusion is that if during the coming year - by the end of George Bush`s term - the American president does not order a military operation against Iran`s nuclear sites, it is doubtful whether it would be possible to prevent Iran from turning into a nuclear state. Jerusalem must start getting used to this and prepare for a "new Middle East."" This "new Middle East" is an uncertain one for Israel. Always, in the past, its stock of clandestine nukes represented its final insurance policy in the event of defeat in conventional warfare. With these it could threaten to destroy the homeland of its enemies if the invading armies were not halted. It was ready to use nukes in 1973. With its nukes rendered unusable by an Islamic deterrent, what then for Israel? It faces a future of rising Islamic extremism on every border. It faces a future in which it must win every war with conventional means alone. This is not a comforting thought. |
