Israel must use their leverage in Congress and the Pentagon to keep the White House at bay. The same holds true in Europe, where France and Germany would never follow the EU lead to penalize Israel. Olmert is afraid of alienating potential allies in the West, and this is what makes him hesitate.
However, the primary responsibility of the government is to protect Israeli citizens, not to act as an extension of European and/or State Department foreign policy. Instead of appeasing political opponents, Olmert should be utterly ruthless in destroying Israel`s enemies. |
