I, for one, always make sure of two things, safety is on AND no cartridge in the chamber--
Unfortunately, soldiers must keep their weapons in a lock and loaded condition, read to go as soon as safety is turned off--
Now, as an example, you take a pistol, put it to your own head, gun fires, no damage, nothing inside--
