Aviva Lori and Haaretz need to be praised for the heart warming article on ZJan and Antonina Zabinski who during the German occupation of Poland saved 300 Jews from annihilation.
Poland, too, had it`s measure of anti-Semitism, like most countries in Europe.
But we must not forget: For hundreds of years, Poland was a haven for Jews persecuted in neighboring countries. After all, the fact of Poland at one time having had the largest Jewish community in the world, 3.5 millions, speaks for much good without words. Also, Poland has the largest number of people honored by the Yad Vashem Holocaust Martyrs` and Heroes` Remembrance Authority in Jerusalem for saving Jewish lives during the Holocaust, namely 6004. Germany, for instance, with at that time as today double as many inhabitants only has 443 such rescuers.
Today the Polish people are streching out their hand of friendship towards Jews. I gladly accept.
