"In his new introduction, the scholar wrote that some on the fringe of Jewish Ashkenazi society often used dried blood in religious ceremonies."
Certainly I sympathize w/Prof. Toaff if he`s trying to persuade Sephardim not to send their kids to those Ashkenazi yeshivas.
But Jewish ritual has been fairly open to scholarship for millennia. There`s no use in any religious ceremony for any use of any blood.
Toaff may have found some magical cultists. Has nothing to do with Judaism.
Some Christian brooding over Jesus, killed with lots of blood in the Roman way, combining with the image of Jesus as an infant, converged to create this meme, beginning with Julian of Norwich.
Doesn`t seem to exist in Muslim world at all, till recent, European-influenced times, because this meme couldn`t form there. |
