Shavit, like most of the Left, deep down views the State of Israel as some sort of abberation, and he doesn`t view the Jews as a people with its own land. That is why he relates to the Golan Heights, a place of ancient Jewish settlement where many ancient synagogues have been unearthed, as simply a nice place to have a vacation, simply "real estate" to be bargained away. But, then again, his Left also can`t wait to get rid of Jerusalem, either.
Assad couldn`t make peace if he wanted to. He heads a minority Alawite regime that is despised by the Syrian population. It survives by constantly mobilizing the population against the "Zionist threat". If he made peace, he would lose this card and the population would turn against his regime. Walid Jumblatt in Lebanon has stated this. That`s why Shavit`s grovelling for "peace" has no chance. |
