The accusation is that Almog is in violation of an international treaty. That`s not typically the purview of a lower-level court. And to have the police detailed to arrest a foreign leader for those reasons, without consultation with the FO, seems quite muddle-headed.
Seems more a publicity stunt for political ends than anything more serious.
But I agree that the BBC spinning it this way is not merely sensationalism but bias. As is typical for the Beeb in this area. Security personnel normally carry weapons. And the idea that the UK cops were motivated to board the plane seems unlikely. If the plane were military, then there are further problems w/boarding it.
Israel probably wd pull a Briton off a commercial flight on conventional charges. Probably not for political game-playing.
UK FO apologized afterward, indicating this was a weird publicity stunt by some lawyers and a magistrate. And the Beeb keeps the pot boiling, because of its own slant. |
