Castro was openly and avowedly a Communist and worked closely with Che, another Communist. He ran the nation as any other commuunist nation. It worked well while he had Soviet money. It`s fallen apart since then.
As for US citizens, most don`t care about Cuba, and those that do overwhelmingly think it`s dumb that we embargo Cuba while giving China "Most Favored Nation" status.
There`s only one reason Cuba gets treated the way it does: Florida`s influence in the Presidential race. If that ever changes (long overdue) and politicians tell the Cuban exiles to FO, Cuba would be open and Communism would die there.
