Your sentiments are commendable. you are right to say Castro would have been elected. Even today he is still loved by most of his people.
The problem for Castro was he was too much in love with power to be willing to give it up. Nevertheless, had he agreed to free and fair elections this would have invited the US to engage in massive acts of subversion and funding of pro US groups as has been done elsewhere on the continent, repeatedly, most recently in Venezuela. Unfortunately, his way was the only way to keep out the US businessmen waiting to ravage the nation along with the exiled Cuban gangsters and their mafia customs.
