Finally a voice of reason in a sea of hyped hysteria.
Yoel Marcus is correct to point out that state-sponsored assassinations are counter-productive in every sense. The bloodthirsty ultra-nationalist types get a momentary "high" everytime a "terrorist" is murdered by official Israeli operatives, but the euphoria is limited and short-lived.
When "democratic" states reduce themselves to embracing the "law of the jungle", as opposed to the rule of law, then neither side can claim the moral high ground. The moral equivalency argument cuts both ways.
One man`s "terrorist" is another man`s "freedom fighter". What some perceive as "Jewish Settlers" others perceive as armed, colonialist invaders.
The ends do not justify the means, even for blessed Zionism. As Mahatmas Gandhi once remarked, "Be mindful of the means and the ends will take care of themselves".
Israel would do well to heed Gandhi`s advice. |
