The first "Chief Minister"of Singapore was David Saul Marshallh who was born into an Orthodox Jewish family of Iraqi ancestry in Singapore. Jews of Iraqi ancestry played a very great role in Singapore`s beginnings. The Jewish community in S`pore dates back to 1840.The current permanent Jewish community numbers close to 500,most of whom are affluent, and quite a few of whom are prominent,leading figures in the business and legal professions. Most originate from Iraq.I was part of that community.One of Lee Kuan Yew`s bodyguards was a Jew.
