In terms of a deal on a ceasfire, Israel has said its not a go unless and until:

1. Hamas renounces violence (terror really)
2. Recognizes Israel
3. Agrees to provide by previous agreements.

That is what is required for a formal ceasefire. Absent these kinds of committments, Israel knows from experience, that a ceasefire will simply be used by Hamas to reload. That`s not on.

In terms of an informal ceasefire, that is one without an agreement to cease hostilities, Israel has always said that if there is quiet in Gaza, it will be quiet. But this reserves the right to respond to non-quiet and also importing of weapons.

Why should Israel be even slightly interested in a cease fire if it isn`t associated with a peaceful committment? From its perspective, it means short term gain for long term pain.
