First, Syria would be rid of a problem.
Second, it would send a message to other hangers on in Syria.
Third, it would make life uncomfortable for the two nations which refuse to talk peace with Syria - Israel and the USA.

In the end, I do not think Syria was responsible, but will consider the possibility.

Nor do I think it is likely that Israel whacked him. Why should Israel chose to cause trouble on it`s northern front when it is profoundly engaged in the south?

The one nation which has a record of reckless actions in recent years, and is desperate to start one more war before next November, is the US.

Certainly the US has it`s reasons to whack the man. Likewise, the US has reasons to want Israel to be involved in another war right now, particularly a war with either Syria or Iran.

When one has made as many enemies as Mughniyah, it can be hard to say who would want him dead the most, much less who would want him dead now.

Only one nation had a Presidential announcement ready. .
