Nobody can remember the last time that Israels leadership made a sound and effective decision. They have vacillated between getting their clock cleaned in Lebanon to dithering and hand wringing over Gaza, with much tough talk in between. All of this lack of purpose has given much heart to Israels enemies. Israels style of war is to attack their enemies from a safe distance to minimize Israeli casualties, even if it adds to Arab casualties. This is why Israels leadership is dithering over a Gaza invasion. Israels hawks realize that you will have to break a few IDF eggs to make an omelet, but the hawks are not in charge, so they will not have to deal with the casualty lists. Israels "moderates", to use the term loosly, already have one epic disaster on their hands and are not eager for another one. There is no way that a Gaza operation can turn out good. The outcomes are all varying degrees of disaster.
