This isn`t Lebanon. Hamas isn`t in the same position as Hezbollah. If the IDF launches a massive assault on Gaza, Hamas is dead. It`s that simple. They`ve managed to make enemies of every single neighbor; this includes Israel, Egypt, Jordan, and their political opponents in the PA. What good is an alliance with Iran and Syria, who are physically incapable of providing support in the event of all out war?
My impression is that Hamas is trying to drag the IDF into Gaza. But this is a reckless strategy. The IDF already knows the identities of Hamas loyalists through a sophisticated network of informants. Once the IDF begins major combat operations in the Strip, they could very well continue until Hamas is either completely wiped out, or so degraded that recovery would prove impossible. |
