In Summer 2006 Olmert grabbed at the chance for war.
His war was a fiasco.
Earlier that summer an incursion into Gaza had also been a fiasco.
Last year IDF soldiers involved with a limited incursion had reported that Hamas fought as never before.
It was apparent that Hamas had learned from the victory of Hizbollah.
Now Olmert and Barak are clearly fearful of committing Israel to another bloody and unproductive fiasco in Gaza.
Yet they also refuse to pursue any alternative.
They have trapped themselves and will not deal with reality.
Reality is not `simple`. It would require occupying 100% of Gaza within range of Israel and forcing every single Arab out of that terrain.
That would put Israeli soldiers in the position of targets for an unlimited period.
And thus it would mean more Israeli casualties than letting the rockets rain upon Sderot.
The other alternative - and certainly not a sure thing - is trying a cease fire with Hamas.
Buy that is out of the question. |
