If they shouldn`t, then neither should we. Iran is a technologically advanced regional power. It has the full capability of an indigenous nuclear program, with one likely exception. Iran has invested heavily in its native nuclear program, and Iran has discovered sufficient uranium inside its borders to sustain a couple of generations of its citizens with nuclear energy. With its considerable oil and gas reserves for export, coupled with its home-grown nuclear power program, the obvious next step is the expansion of nuclear power, with all of the help that Iran is entitled to by virtue of its support for non-prolifration through the NPT. Given a similar set of parameters, what other country in the world would not pursue the benefits of nuclear power? Which brings me to the one very serious problem with Iran`s nuclear program. The spent-fuel from Bushehr will return to Russia. But what will Iran do with any Iranian-fabricated spent fuel from the coming generation of reactors? |
