hand if one starts using religiously oriented laws,no matter how hallowed they are by tradition.Advocates of introducing sharia may say it is only for civil(not criminal)cases, but financial&marriage laws impact seriously on women.A similar mistake was made under the Indian PM Rajiv Gandhi who disallowed the Indian High Court`s decision to support a woman(Saira Banu) in her divorce case, according to our legal system. But Rajiv did this under pressure from some religious clerics. The Indian Constitution does allow some limited practice of sharia law provided it does not conflict with the Constitution. In this case,it did & Rajiv`s decision was an unfortunate one for women`s rights in India. It was protested by women`s advocacy groups.
The Indian legal system acts in consonance with the Constitution & there is no special provision for Hindu law or Buddhist law etc. There is a uniform legal system for all Indian citizens. So Gerges is right,in my opinion.
