I see in the first few posts some basic misconceptions about Canadian law.

Insurance companies are not involved. Medical care in Canada is state-provided and free and so insurance companies play no role. Those who refer to insurance show breathtaking ignorance.

Cost is not an issue. We keep elderly people alive indefinitely. Indeed, we conduct hip replacements on 95 year olds, medically absurd though it is, just to make their families feel happy.

The sole legal issue is whether he is or is not irreversibly brain dead.

The absurd American incident, where a brain-dead woman in Florida was kept supposedly "alive" for ages because of falsified reports that she was responding - the usual nonsense that family members, and fanatic "doctors" whose religious beliefs outweigh their Hippocratic oaths, like to spout - will, I hope never be duplicated here.

I am not certain that doctors should have the last word, but I am certain that family members should not.
