By The Associated Press: Giuliani drops out of presidential race, joins Schwarzenegger in backing McCain

The scuttlebutt from my last local Democratic Party club meeting is that McCain, if nominated by the Republicans, may very well choose another independent-minded fellow to stand as Vice President: Joe Lieberman, the "independent Democratic" senator - and strong supporter of Israel - from Connecticut.

If this happens, it could really scramble what`s already turning out to be an anything-but-normal election year. If the Democrats nominate Clinton, the Jewish vote may stay, more or less, with her come November. But if Obama is nominated, it`s anyone`s guess whether most Jews will stick with the Democrats. My perception is that there is a black/Jewish fault line running through the Democratic Party, and that many Jews are concerned with Obama`s Muslim roots.

Obama will need all his powers of persuasion if he`s standing against a McCain-Lieberman ticket.
