You seem to forget that one of the most important aspects of a democratic government is that the public entrusts its welfare and security to a small representative elected body and not to a one person one vote administration. That body is expected to make choices after advising with people of expertise and experience. We did not elect Olmert only: we elected Kadima for its platform despite the fact that Olmert was at the helm.
The army does not listen to the public and determine its strategies according to popular opinion. There are professional military people trained and experienced in such issues, in whom we place trust and our lives. One of the objectives in any war is to keep casualties to a minimum. Are the Israeli people unique in that? Perhaps yes, and to our advantage.
Accountability lies with the government we elected and the military in whom we place our trust. Both failed to protect us and to meet up to our justified expectations and must assume responsibility.
