Eyal,

I agree with your well-written post. I`ve only learned very recently how far Germany has come in facing its past and dealing with it in an honest, courageous and upstanding way.

Growing up in London and surviving the Blitz, the coincidence of my birthdate being the date of Hitler`s rise to power was only the first coincidence of many: my life and Hitler`s were ironically, and sometimes tragically, bound together.

I harboured ill-will against the Germans for a very long time; but I am glad to say my recent correspondence with a number of very decent younger Germans - aided by our common interest in Israel and our postings on Ha`Aretz - have made me much more positive. I even celebrated my 75th birthday today with my first-ever purchase of German goods: a six-pack of Spaten dark beer.

I`ll drink to Germany.
