Two of my children have celebrated their bar/bat mitvahs in Israel, in great part to avoid this kind of scene. One must ask what "mitzvah" the parents are performing by teaching their children that crass extravagence is alright, much less the message of becoming an adult in the Jewish world. G-d help us.
