The majority of Jews are Democrats because the Democrats are the party that (more or less) stands for social justice--another name for the core Jewish value of Tikkun Olam. Protecting the environment, ensuring that all have healthcare, putting checks and balances on the mass accumulation of wealth by a privaleged few all stem from the social justice espoused by the prophets and the very idea of Mitzvot, Tzedek.
It confounds me that ther are Jews who are not politically progressive. To me a Jew who alligns him or herself with the party of greed, corruption, fear, and divisivness--the Republicans-- has lost his or her core sense of Jewish values.
Being Jewish doesn`t mean identifying with a narrow sense of nationalistic identity--that tends towards facsism in the true sense of the word. |
