| There is an old Jewish joke that saiys: The only real czechoslovak is the Jew, because he is neither Czech nor Slovak. We see how ethnic politics divided countries that were formerly united. The problem here is that a binational state would require both parties to define a new common, secular identity not based on ethnic or religious or tribal identity but on a concept of citizenship. That is not the case her, although we have the positive developments in Northern Ireland where agreement did at least superficially transcend religious identity politics. |
