While Bush/Rice will spin this latest round of sanctions as a success, what it actually does is lock the US out of hurting Iran.
By agreeing to these very weak sanctions, Russia, China, etc have actually boxed the US into a corner. The US not only lacks UN authority to more any more strongly against Iran, but the door is now closed to further US requests to use the UN to escalate the situation.
There are no new deadlines set by this latest round of sanctions, and no reason why the UN would need to re-address this issue before the Nov. elections coming in 10 months.
This is check-mate on any US attempts at getting the UN to authorize force against Iran under the Bush administration. |
