But it mainly stemmed from the feeling that there might be a last-minute softening in the American position, accepting the French/Lebanese demands, the sources said." -- In other words, the offensive was intended to make any softening of the US position impossible, i.e., it was intended to force the hand of the US. This happens a lot but is seldom said in so many words. |
