| It`s a Southern courtesy to find something honest and self deprecating in introducing yourself. Fred Thompson got himself in trouble for telling someone that `he didn`t look forward to campaigning for President.` The problem is that if people are not Southerners and not looking for it, they miss, in this case, Bush`s riff on it. He was kind of making fun of himself playing Alfred E. Newman, the `what me worry` MAD magazine character. In other words, he was playing stupid, probably with the intent also to say, in effect, `wouldn`t it would be wonderful if the conflict were dropped and such travel was common.` Given his position and the misunderstanding, it has come across as arrogant. |
