Look the notion of a Jewish state need not be inconsistent with the idea that I as an Arab citizen of Israel am a full citizen of the state. But such rights must be guaranteed and explicit.
The main fear of Israeli Arabs revolve around official and market place racism. Even racist rhetoric should be illegal. For example, Lieberman should not be allowed to express his racism against nonJewish citizens of the state. There has to be legal confirmation that their citizenship is untouchable.
Further, their national and religious background must become invisible, as it where. That is no public official should be allowed to enquire about any individual`s ethnicity. For example, security(kids) at the airport who regularly harass Arab travelers should be banned from asking the perennial questions: what is your background? are you a Jew? do you know any Jews? What is your connection to Israel if you are not a Jew. I kid you not, these are the types of silly questions we are exposed to. |
