Of course they knew who he was and of course he is a commander in Hamas which is exactly why he was killed. Any known member, associate, affiliate, supporter or contributer to Hamas should suffer a similar fate. Furthermore, Hamas has repeatedly stated their intention to fight and reject and form of peace or co-existence. Personally I think Israel treats them with kid gloves. Why Zahar, Haniyeh or Mashal are alive is a complete mystery to me.
