| It took 60 years to hide the massive extent of former Nazis playing a fundamental role in post-war Germany. It is clear that the archives contain not only informations about the victims but about the German perpetrators as well. It was not possible to get informations about living persons, even relatives, without explicit approval by them. This system protected the former Nazi war criminals which were again very active in Germany. The time span of 60 years was chosen to guarantee thousands of former war criminals a comfortable life in Germany, often with high pensions. Many received even special pensions as war victims. |
